About my role

Over a six-month engagement, I served as the primary technical expert for a team delivering the transition of a suit of climate models from Excel to Python.

My responsibilities included:

  • Led the technical delivery of the migration and acted as the primary Python expert for a team of five.
  • Assessed the technical and operational risks associated with migrating the modelling ecosystem from Excel to Python.
  • Established development standards, coding practices, and governance for Python-based models.
  • Designed and implemented a reusable framework to enable future model migrations using a consistent, scalable approach.
  • Advised on the team's Python training strategy and mentored colleagues with little or no prior Python experience through code reviews, pair programming, and technical guidance.

Impact

Beyond delivering the initial migration, I focused on creating sustainable engineering practices that would support future projects. The result was not just a successful model transition, but a repeatable development framework, improved technical capability across the team, and a solid foundation for the organisation's wider adoption of Python for model development.
